Flawlessly natural and awfully funny.
— DigBoston's review of Avery in "Proof"

I’m Avery Bargar. I’m an actor, improviser, musician and funny man based in NYC originally from the great state of Massachusetts. Before I tell you a bit more about me and what I do and where I got the gall to call myself a funny man, do check out these developments…

Through Sunday March 17, I’m playing Brock Lovett and John J Astor IV in TitanISH at Greater Boston Stage Company in Stoneham, MA. I also music directed the production (truly it was a collaborative effort) and I play keys and guitar live onstage! Get your tickets here!

I play German Chancellor Hans Thüring in NEWTS! Coproduced by PRX, NEWTS! is a musical radio drama featuring some amazing Broadway talent, the one and only Mo Rocca, and ME.

The show is a runaway hit, getting glowing reviews in the BBC, Vulture, The Guardian, Radio France, and more. In January, 2023 we got nominated for Best Fiction Podcast of the Year by the Podcast Academy!

Start from the beginning, or tune in at Episode 5 (to the right) to hear me sing an Ode to Newts.

Hammers & Felt

My debut solo piano EP “Hammers & Felt” dropped in July 2022! Listen to it here. “Ma’oz Tzur,” “On The Sunny Side Of The Street,” and “Autumn Leaves” are my original arrangements, and “Left Alone” is my own composition. I have been playing each of these songs for years, and I’m excited to share them with you as you’ll hear them here. If you enjoy them, let me know. If you don’t, you can still let me know. That might be even more useful, if you’re specific about it.

Back to what I do: I act in plays, I improvise, I clown, and I write dark comedy. As an actor I have performed in California, New York, and all over New England. Recent credits include “Turn of Events” and “Paradise Lost and Found” in Manhattan, “Measure for Measure” with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company in Boston, and lots of comedy shows around NYC.

I’m also a piano player and an in demand music director of improvisational theatre. In bands I traveled all over New England, and you can often catch me behind the keys for the People’s Improv Theatre, The Story Pirates NYC, and other companies and venues I’ll plug here!

I love comedy, physical theatre, improvisation, music, and anything that makes me laugh so hard I cry. I also love crying so hard I laugh.
